Handicap Ramp in the Snow

With Central Virginia mid-October temperatures heading towards the 90’s, I thought we could use a snow photo!

Several years ago we built a home (Camp Karen)for multiple generations.  Since my mother in law was going to be living with us, we included two 1st level suites, wider doors, height appropriate sinks, multi zoned heating systems, a ramp, and other custom features.  Little did we know we were plodding through aspects of universal design on our own.  There are many aspects of universal design and I would urge you to explore them but I want to focus on residential universal design.  Universal design allows multiple generations to live together or home owners to age in place instead of moving your home limits your mobility.  For those who want to age in place (not move from their home as they age but retrofit the home to meet changing needs), Central Virginia has a new resource.  Builder Fish specializes in recycling homes to fit the needs of aging owners.  Instead of moving into a different home or retirement community, new options all owners to stay in their current homes and age in place.  For our next home (who knows when that will be!), I definitely plan to use more universal design since that will probably be our last new construction project!
