Some have asked about my eye surgery. In the fall of 2007 doctors in Charlottesville, Virginia discovered my vision had deteriorated to the point where glasses/contacts could not correct the challenge. The laser specialists found parts of the eye to be too thin to be corrected with Lasik procedures. Fortunately, I was referred to Dr. Kenlyn Miller of Rockingham Eye Physicians and Associates, P.C. who was able to perform a new procedure . First the team used a laser to correct astigmatism and prep for the surgery. In surgery the team placed a Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) created by STAAR Surgical Company in Switzerland into each eye. To lessen the chance of damage to both eyes two separate surgical procedure a week apart were performed. For the first surgery I could not see the ceiling of the OR (heck in Dr. Miller’s office I could not see the wall, much less the chart mounted on the wall, without corrective lenses). Once the light was removed during surgery, I could see the ceiling. Yes, I was awake throughout the surgery and aware of what the team was doing. For the second surgery the pain meds hadn’t quite kicked in (we arrived late for the surgury), so I asked the team to give the meds a little more time before continuing. The staff and facilities at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia provided excellent care before, during and after surgury. Because I was older (late 40’s then), I’ve been asked to participate in a follow up study. The procedure has been a blessing for me, giving me 20/25 vision with only light reading glasses needed. I am more than happy to help with the study in the hopes that others can be blessed with improved vision. If your eye doctor offers the ICL’s as a solution to your vision challenges, I would recommend the procedure. If you have questions on the procedure, let’s talk!
